interior design. Edited by Tina Skinner and published by Schiffer Publishing, it
is sold at Barnes and Nobles and can be found on www.amazon.com We are very
proud to be included in this lovely hard cover book among other influential
interior designers.
Jim Thompson and Tony Duquette have joined forces. What an amazing
collaboration. Two of the most creative and alluring designers of our time, both
enigmatic characters. Available through Kneedler at the PDC. I was invited to
the home of Tony Duquette, hosted by his partner Hutton Wilkinson who helped in
the design of the collection. The fabrics are beautiful, luxurious silks with
elegant designs and come in many color ways. Going to Tony Duquette's house was
the real treat of the day. Having been one of 12 students selected to be an
intern of Tony's at his Malibu retreat, when I was in my last year of Design
school, I was enamored to be back in his environment and surrounded by his
amazing creative energy. It was really a treat and I suggest that anybody who is
interested in design get familiar with Tony Duquette and the story of Jim
Thompson and you will see why this collaboration is a perfect one.

Besides being an interior designer, I am an avid photographer and am proud to
announce the publication of my new book of photographs, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.
Through my travels and my daily life, beauty is everywhere I look. I see images
in the oceans and the mountains, on the bike path in Venice Beach and throughout
the diverse city of LA. Come with me for a tour and enjoy the the world as I see
it behind the lens of my camera. Click the link and see for yourself.
Loft living in downtown LA is the hottest new trend to happen in decades.
Downtown has come alive with the Staples Center and the Nokia Theater. The
energy down there is like being in Times Square in New York City. (almost).
Loft living has arrived! With the rising prices of homes on the Westside of Los
Angeles, the baby boomers and the Generation "X"ers are escaping to the center
of downtown. These units boast square footage unheard of in Marina Del Rey or
Venice. They are open and bright and MODERN, with enormous factory windows and
views of the mountains and the skyline. The kitchens are state of the art as are
the bathrooms, the ceilings are high and there is plenty of wall space for large
art installations or some other creative endeavor.
These buildings all
have these wonderful amenities like cutting edge gyms, rooftop pools and
fabric-draped cabanas that overlook the lights of the city below. Doesn't have
any resemblance to LA! The newer hi-rise 'lofts' are in the center of the "theater
district" and those views are unbelievable. These buildings are planning
to build up to 72 stories and will be the tallest building in the West. Other
lofts are converted old factories like the
Biscuit Company Lofts and the
Toy Factory Lofts. They are on Alamenda St. closer to the 10 freeway
and unfortunately, some, like the Tokyo Lofts are right around the corner from
the LA Mission. That could be a problem, but then again, we have homeless in
Beverly Hills and Santa Monica too. Downtown is finally becoming a real center
for us Angelino's who never believed we really had a center.
It is very
exciting to be downtown these days, there is always something cultural going on;
a concert at The Disney Hall or a Lakers game at The Staples Center or a rock
concert at the Nokia. There are daily discussions at the LA Library, live music
at the Music Center, live theater at Dorothy Chandler, wonderful art exhibits at
MOCA and the Geffen Contemporary, there are art walks once a month on Spring
Street, there's Chinatown, Union Station, Cathedral of the Angels (don't
miss
Robert Graham's bronze doors or his Lady of the Angel statue)
and
Olivera Street Restaurants are wonderful and plentiful and new ones
are opening all the time.
If you are looking for a weekend adventure,
go downtown and check it out. It's a new world down there and its only just
begun. I predict that lofts will TAKE OFF . . . once the real estate fears
subside. LA has nowhere else to go . . . but up! Check out the January 08 issue
of the Robb Report for our Venice Loft project.
Kelley Wearstler designed the lobby of the historic
Eastern Columbia building. Saturday's LA Times ran an article on
Lofts in the California section called "From
Gritty to Glamorous". Check it out online
Check out the April issue of Veranda Magazine. Designer Stephen Shubel designed
a residence in Sausalito, California all in pink. It is luscious and delicious.
Pink walls throughout the home, pink striped chairs and a hot pink sofa. No, it
doesn't look like a boredello. It is so refreshing to see something different,
something new and so elegant. Color is the least expensive design element in
your home and maybe the one that makes the biggest statement.

Using color on the dining room walls. Color is fun. So is being an interior
designer and a photographer.
French blue is gorgeous, I just used it in
a dining room with white trim. Chocolate is also a wonderful shade, even though
you might think it makes the room dark, it actually does the opposite. It makes
the room stand out, rich and alive. Use white trim or Swiss Coffee to offset the
deep shades. Remember when we used color before everyone went white white white?
Well, color is back and it is back in a big way. Be bold, be fearless and take a
chance.
Using color in the interior design of this living room.
Just remember, most people want something different as long as it is the same!
So get out of the box... pink isn't just for little girls anymore.
A fabulous elegant new showroom has just opened in West LA, Glabman Home. What
used to be a furniture store, Glabman furniture, has been re-invented as the
last of a dying breed, a place to shop for quality, American made furniture. You
have to check this out. The place is designed like a home, with vignettes in
every room, an entry, dining room, great room, bedroom, a contemporary and a
traditional living room, a boutique filled with accessories, one of a kind items
and furniture that is available for immediate delivery. They also have personal
interior design services for those in need. Of course they work with the trade
and invite designers to bring their clients. The store is gorgeous, and has
plenty of parking. Remember Pier One on Santa Monica Blvd? Now its
Glabman Home.
It is so exciting to see one of our projects in print in such a high quality
publication as the Robb Report. Pages
80-85 are devoted to a
Venice Beach Loft that was designed for a bachelor. It is on
newsstands now and we are very proud!
Here are the pages as they appeared in the December issue.
Meet Joani Stewart of Montana Ave Interiors. She discusses the three
